Endoscopic removal of foreign bodies from the upper gastrointestinal tract

Nurse endoscopists remove many items that become lodged in the oesophagus, stomach or duodenal bulb after being swallowed by the patient. These may be sharp and awkwardly shaped, and they can often present a serious danger. Case studies from a Croatian hospital are presented with photographs, selected for their severity and the complexity of their removal. The rationale is given for using each different endoscopic device—grasping forceps, pronged graspers, grasping basket, mini snare, biopsy forceps—as well as the risks present in each procedure. These cases provide instructive examples of how endoscopy teams can respond in similar cases.
