Multiple Sclerosis Relapse Recognition: Using Co-Design to Improve Patient Self-Reports
People living with multiple sclerosis (MS) are encouraged to report suspected relapses to their MS specialist nurse (MSN) so that appropriate care can be co-ordinated. However, this is not always straightforward, as MS relapses can be difficult for patients to recognise and, sometimes, complicated even for clinicians, especially GPs, to diagnose; this is recognised as a factor contributing to under-reporting of symptoms. This article describes the outcomes of a service improvement project that used co-design methodology to gain an understanding of the factors influencing relapse under-reporting, leading to the redesign of an existing MS relapse service and the development of a patient self-reporting tool and a complementary tool designed to guide relapse management for GPs.
