Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): survey of awareness and understanding among professionals in secondary care

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) refers to a spectrum of hepatic conditions unrelated to alcohol consumption and affects around 30% of the UK adult population. It can progress from steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), increasing the risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. This article investigates the extent of awareness of NAFLD, its symptoms and causes among a range of secondary care professionals, highlighting the areas which need urgent improvement.
