Empowering adolescents and the wider community to recognise adolescent relationship abuse

Abuse within the context of an adolescent intimate relationship constitutes a major social and public health issue; the impact of abuse can be life-long and span generations. This literature review analyses current research and literature and explores the factors that may predispose adolescents to become a victim or perpetrator of relationship abuse, alongside the factors that reinforce and maintain abusive behaviour. The school nurse may interact with adolescents before, during and after an episode of relationship abuse. Therefore this article also looks at the role of the school nurse in enabling adolescents to recognise abusive behaviour within an intimate relationship, and makes recommendations for future school nursing practice.
